i am working in a large handmade journal for some

of the exercises from an online workshop, embrace yourself,

led by misty mawn.  i have taken her workshop at the beginning

of every year and cannot recommend her enough

as an inspirational teacher.

.

my friend, jacki long, lovingly called her daughter

wonder woman.  i saw the posting of this exhibit

at the long beach museum of ant and

thought it would be a fun outing.

a different offering, right?

and, lastly,  a sunset view from the palos verdes

beach club.

i am posting today with friends at paint party friday.

hello,

for the past seven days using a limited palate in 10 minutes

i joined in with friends and posted on instagram.  this is

one of the quick paintings.   i later added collage.

and a journal spread

i am painting over previously painted canvases like this one.

i attended a retrospective of  frank romero's art

at the museum of latin american art in long beach.

he is  a los ángeles artist raised in boyle heights, where i grew up.

he depicts los ángeles since the 70's and has been prolific!

some of his murals depict the history of mexican american in la.

he uses vibrant colors with bold brush strokes.  the energy from his

paintings is palatable.   i will need to go back to again to

be able to appreciate the scope of his work.

this is the study of  the mural  he painted along the freeway  for the 1984 olympics.

Happy Friday with wishes for an enjoyable weekend!

i felt like i hit the jackpot when i found a sonia delunay book

on sale at anthropologie.  i love her use of color and design but

was unfamiliar with her figures.  i used a small section of one of her

paintings for this teabag painting.

i am experimenting with figure drawing this week.

simple lines are deceptively difficult.

i have paper ephemerah flowing from drawers,

shelves, closets.  a friend suggested i use them to collage in large books.

he said don't think about it.  just work intuitively.  here are a few

pages.  i worked fast, intuitively and had a lot of fun!  also he said

that i can cut portions of the pages if i want to use them in a painting.

good idea!

it's been hot, hot, hot this week.  in the 90's.

but the sunsets have been spectacular and the

evenings delicious.

thank you for visiting today.

have a lovely weekend!

since i take photos wherever i go, before i write a post

i scan the photo library on my phone to remind myself

where i have been and what i have been doing.

it's a willey-nilly style of organization.  i like it.

how do you decide on your next post?

this week i attended the rubber-stamp convention

in carson with my art pal, lorraine.  we also too

a junk journal class with teesha moore.

here is a peek of the journal.   i continue to add more and more

until it is crammed full of stuff i love and words i want to say.

after reading my friend jacki long's blog  about being

side-tracked on a day when she had her plate already full.

i couldn't resist.   today i have to

submit titles, prices, sizes and an artist

statement and complete the blog listing of all the

teabag paintings (over 130)  for a July show where

i will have an installation space to display the teabag ladies that

i have been painting daily for this year.

good day to be sidetracked. so with a roll of clear packing tape,

a junk mail travel brochure, glue stick, just completed journal  and

time i don't have, i got busy.

opened journal cover

the procedure is simple.

1     place the clear tape on a magazine page, rub or burnish

2     rip up the tape from the page.  you will get a portion of whatever image was

on the page.  you can play around with this.  the harder you burnish, the  more

of the page will come up.  it's not an exact science.  i like that!

taped brochure strip

strip glued on the journal

arrange the strips  and glue.

easy peasy!

but this simple technique transformed how i feel about the journal.

i hadn't been able to move on to a new journal because although

all of the pages were  filled, something stopped me.

it love the new look of my journal

and can move on to a new journal and to getting today's work done.

off to early morning journaling at the ranch

market  with the scantest of supplies.

first i did some non dominant hand  journaling.

then drawing, also with my non dominant hand.

i like the lack of control that results.

added some tissue paper.

and thought it needed a little more.

by this time, i've been to take up some

coffee shop real estate.

but in my little neighborhood, there are maybe 4 of us

having coffee at the early morning hour.

thought it needed a bit of orange.  i don't know whether  i am

finished but it was a pleasant morning.

and i am on my way.

i am going simple these days.  not starting anything

large or complicated.  it goes along with

lightening my load, clearing out closets,

papers, garage, drawers.

i'm liking the process.

cheers
