day 9, 30 paintings in 30 days

i fell in love with a painting by james ensor

while on display at the getty museum.

it was so different from anything i would paint

that i decided to paint my version of it.  these

funny faces were quite enjoyable and challenging.

  1. Irene, your Ensor-inspired painting was quite a surprise. I love the strange colors and the way the faces cluster so that a dark shape where you would expect a shadow or background turns out to be another face. In that way it's kind of Escher-like. I love all your work, but this daringly ugly-beautiful one was refreshing.

  3. It is so fun to be inspired by an artist that you either know well or just discover and then to use the style to learn as much as you can about the artist's style. I love that you did this so successfully.
