after spending time with Orly,

here is my rendition of being in the  darkness.

i am enjoying all of the faces i have seen from the 29 faces art challenge.

regretfully i have been out of town and will

be off again in a few days but i will

do my best to keep the faces going.

29 Faces Art Challenge, Day 16

collage, oil pastels, pencil

i like to let paintings sit and simmer for a while.

when i come back to it with fresh eyes i see things

that were not apparent after the first rush of getting down

the concept and color.  this is an example.

well, it would be a better example if

i had a before and after shot.

29 Faces Art Challenge, Day 13

it's hard once you get behind...

on anything.  there is an inner huff and puff experience

not the same being relaxed when life flows.

i'm trying to catch up without the anxiety,

just moving at a pace, one foot in front of the other.

i'll get there.

29 Faces Art Challenge, Day 9

put down the weight of your aloneness and ease into

the conversation.  the kettle is singing

even as it pours you a drink, the cooking pots

have left their arrogant aloofness and

seen the good in you at last.  all the birds

and creatures of the world are unutterably

themselves.  everything is waiting for you.

29 Faces Art Challenge, Day 5

monoprint on paper

today my  face is a mono print.  i will work on her

more over the next week but here she is, fresh off the press.

i have to admit that i was discouraged with this print and

i have to remind myself that i've only been at it for a short time.

i continue to try a different technique with

each face.  i don't have any idea whether

there will be 29 techniques but

i will have fun trying.

29 Faces Art Challenge, Day 4

mixed media on wood

i found a piece of wood in back of my garage.

so i decided it needed a coat of gesso,

some found papers and paint.

then, guess what....

it needed a face.

a face a day is really pushing me.

i like it :)

and you?

29 Faces Art Challenge, Day 3

mixed media on a journal page

adv. properly, well; correctly; fittingly; justly

i heard this japanese word a lot as a child.

i took it to mean that whatever way i was doing 'it',

it wasn't proper enough.

it is  one of the reasons i gravitate toward mixed media work.

there is no proper way.

whatever you do is the right, proper, correct, fitting or just.

now, how's that for fun?

29 Faces Art Challenge, Day 2

untitled mixed media on canvas

this is is a canvas that i've had in a partially done stage

for a while.  you can see a partial transfer in the bottom right corner.

it never felt right.  this go round i painted the whole canvas

with gold, turned it around and around until i finally

saw this face.  i sketched her in pencil then painted her in acrylic

the painting was too shiny so i added some oil pastel then rubbed

some off.

whew.  she did not come easily.

29 Faces Art Challenge, Day 1

during the month of september i will be participating in

i have a couple of out of town trips planned

during that time.  i will be able to draw faces

but will have to learn to post from my phone.

i think's doable.

Day 1

i  used gouache to paint on deli paper.  then adhered the

little painting  to an old japanese book page that had been

gessoed.  i applied beeswax, let it dry and heated it to smooth

the surface.  i wanted a little more color so i scratched the surface

in areas  and used some oil pastels.  the last thing i did was

to heat the wax a bit to level out the surface again.

the edges of the book where there was no gesso

turned a lovely honey shade.  i love the quality of the  wax surface,

like looking through a dream and it is so silky to the touch.

i was so scared to try using wax.  i knew it couldn't be used

with acrylics but this was fun.

i plan to pursue this.

i hope you are enjoying this long holiday weekend
